Start Up Visa

This route closed on 13 April 2023 but Start up applicants may still switch to the Innovator Founder visa

The Start-Up visa is for individuals who are new entrepreneurs and want to establish a business in the U.K. for the first time. This innovative business must be something that’s different from anything else in the market.

You can stay in the U.K. for 2 years on this visa, which cannot be extended. You may be able to switch to an Innovator visa if you set up a business while on a Start-up visa if your endorsing body has assessed and agreed it, it is active, trading and sustainable, and you have day to day involvement in it.

You must apply online, and will need to prove you’re identity and provide necessary documents. You will usually receive a decision on your visa within 3 weeks, if you’re outside the U.K. Your partner and children can apply to join you, or to stay in the U.K. as your ‘dependants’ if they are eligible. If their application is successful, their visa will end on the same date as yours.

Eligibility

Your business or business idea must be assessed by an endorsing body before applying. They will provide you with an endorsement letter if your business is viable.

You must also:

  • - Meet the English language requirement

  • - Be at least 18 years old

  • - Be able to prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you’re in the UK (you need to have had £1,270 in your bank for 28 consecutive days)
